Detroit Public Television will be hosting a screening of highlights from Ken Burns's new project, The Vietnam War, at an hour-long preview on Wednesday, August 23, starting at 7 p.m. at the The War Memorial. The series will air on PBS stations nationwide, beginning on September 17.
In conjunction with the screening, DPTV will host a special tribute to the soldiers who served their country during this period. It will feature a panel discussion focusing on the experiences of soldiers who fought in the war, how the conflict changed their lives and the impact it had on the course of the nation. Nolan Finley, from DPTV’s MiWeek and The Detroit News, will serve as moderator. Cash bar will also be at the event.
Gen. Mike Stone, director of the Michigan National Guard, will welcome the veterans, and representatives of the Veterans Administration will discuss services and benefits available to them.
An honor guard will open the evening on an appropriate note, provided by Chapter 154 of the Vietnam Veterans of America in Roseville. And its volunteers will display the Michigan Vietnam Veteran Traveling Memorial, containing more than 2,600 names of men and women from the state who were lost in action during the war.
